What are Porcelain Veneers, and How are They Fitted?

A veneer is a thin, delicate restoration made of ceramic or composite material that covers the front surface of a tooth. While they can improve function, most veneers are used to improve the appearance of your smile. Unlike a dental crown, a veneer is not a complete replacement for your natural tooth. A veneer is typically placed to help flawlessly conceal chips, cracks, discoloration, crookedness, and gaping of the front teeth.

A veneer typically takes multiple appointments to complete. At your first visit, Dr. Miller will prepare your tooth to make room for the veneer to be placed over it and take a detailed impression that will be sent out to our expert laboratories to sculpt and craft your final veneer. During this period, Dr. Miller typically will place a temporary veneer over the prepared area. Once your veneer is constructed, Dr. Miller will remove your temporary veneer and cement your final veneer in place. Now your tooth is restored to ideal shape and function, and your smile will be greatly improved.

How to Care for Your Porcelain Veneers

After your veneer is placed, it is important to follow home care instructions given by Dr. Miller. This will ensure proper healing and long-term success of your veneer. Avoid biting hard foods and objects as this can damage or even break your veneer. Consider limiting dark sodas, coffee, teas, and other beverages or foods that may cause staining to the veneer. Daily home care will greatly increase the longevity of your veneer, and the health of the underlying tooth. You should resume your daily brushing and flossing routine immediately to keep your veneer free of plaque buildup and decay. It is important to follow-up every six months with your hygienist for dental cleanings and check-ups as recommended by the American Dental Association.
